Friulano

Friulano, Cantina Vigna Rune, € 20,00, gradi 13. Golden yellow wine, dry aromatic flavour, suitable for fish, seafood (including raw), pasta dishes, cheeses that are not too mature, as well as cold cuts (not wild boar). The name means nothing, because this is the glorious Italian Tocai that a dispute in the EU (European Union) made and won by the Hungarian government against the Italian one: it brought about the end of the old and glorious name Tocai, replaced by “Friu|iano” which doesn’t have much sense, as in Friuli there are thousands of wines, so we might just call it “ltaliano”. The decision was absurd, because the Hungarian wine is not only spelled differently but also it is different in substance, since that one is a dessert wine, while ours is a wine for the whole meal. The question could have been resolved by calling our wine “Tocai italico”, as was done for Riesling, of which there is Renano and ltalico. Despite this, this wine is the same, a great wine among the best Italian whites.
